The New Normal Society (NNS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing alternative educational, vocational, and social experiences for teens and young adults on the autism spectrum. NNS supports and delivers programs in the communities of Vero Beach, Sebastian, and Ft. Pierce. Some programs and services are free of charge while others may qualify for Medicaid and other state and federal funding.

NNS programs and services are reviewed quarterly to make sure benefits and value align with cost and participation levels. Current and anticipated programs and services include:

Hydroponic GardeningNew Normal Society - Hydroponic Gardening Autism Program

Hydroponics is the method of growing plants and vegetables without soil by using mineral nutrient solutions in a water solvent. Walt Disney World's EPCOT Center features a variety of hydroponic techniques, and NASA utilizes hydroponics in the space program research.

Participants in our Hydroponic Gardening program will learn how to nurture, grow, and harvest fruits and vegetables. They will also learn important vocational and micro-enterprise skills. The goal of our pilot program is for fruits and vegetables from the garden to be sold at Vero Beach's Farmers Market Oceanside.

Equestrian Program

Our equestrian program focuses on the healing power of horses to improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Riding horses in a safe and supported environment is therapeutic for many people, and proximity to horses improves focus and social interaction. Our program participants learn to care for horses in hands-on educational experiences.  We are proud to partner with Special Equestrians of Vero Beach for this outstanding program.

New Normal Society - Autism Cooking ClassCooking and Culinary Classes

Preparing healthy meals and understanding nutrition are important life skills for teens and young adults with autism. Our cooking classes use a combination of easy, no-cook recipes and the Raddish curriculum for practice in measuring, kitchen safety, following directions, and using kitchen tools properly. Cooking classes are followed by a group meal to practice social skills and good manners in a natural and supportive environment.

Art Classes

We are thrilled to partner with Diossy Art Studio in Vero Beach for entertaining and educational art classes. Participants learn to use paints, charcoal pencils, pastels, and clay to express their creativity.

Private Tutoring

NNS provides one-on-one academic tutoring services by a certified teacher for children, teenagers, and young adults, including students who benefit from an adapted or modified curriculum (ESE). We also provide support for students in Florida Virtual School (FLVS). Please contact us for scheduling.

Education Advocacy

For families new to autism or special education (or for those who have recently relocated to Indian River County), NNS provides counseling to help identify local educational resources including public, private, and after-school academic programs. We also provide strategies for evaluating on-going Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and advocate alongside families during IEP meetings.

Assisted Volunteerism

Our clients are not just clients - they are also an integral part of our community. We work with many local organizations including the Humane Society and HALO to provide meaningful volunteer opportunities for teens and young adults with autism.

Community Outings

For young adults with autism, social isolation can be one of the toughest experiences to overcome. The New Normal Society provides many opportunities to participate in community outings. Our destinations include the Brevard Zoo, Indian River Square Mall, the Environmental Learning Center, the Vero Beach Museum of Art, local restaurants, and the sensory room at the M.O.R.G.A.N. Project.
